What is Ultimate? Ultimate is a non-contact disc sport played by two teams of seven players. The object of the game is to score goals. A goal is scored when a player catches any legal pass in the end zone. A player may not run while holding the disc. The disc is advance by passing it to other players; the disc can be passed in any direction. Any time a pass is incomplete, a turnover occurs, resulting in an immediate change of the team in possession of the disc.

  • Official Disc of USA Ultimate
  • No metal cleats are allowed
  • All players must wear the same colored team shirt, no number is required.

Playing Field
The playing field will measure 90 yards x 30 yards
60 yards playing space, 15 yard end zones on each end of the field

Length of Game
A game is played until one team reaches or exceeds the point cap or time cap.

Time Cap — 50 minutes
Point Cap — 11 points

A 3 minute halftime will begin at 25 minutes.

At 50 minutes, the next point ends the game and the team with the most points wins. If a team is tied at 45 minutes, the next team to score is the winner.

Time Outs
Each team will have (2) 1 minute times outer per half. Game clock will stop for timeouts.

Ultimate in 10 Simple Rules
1. The Field: A rectangular shape with end zones at each end. Field size will be 90 yards x 30 yards. Playing space will be 60 yards with 15 yard end zones on each end.

2. Initiate Play: Offense and defense is determined with a disc or coin flip at the beginning of the game. Play begins by each team lining up in their respective end zones. The defense throws the disc to the offense. Play will be 7 v 7.

3. Scoring: Each time the offense completes a pass in the defense’s end zone, the offense scores a point. Scoring team will transition to defense.

4. Movement of the Disc: The disc may be advanced in any direction by completing a pass to a teammate. Players may not run with the disc. The person with the disc “thrower” has 10 seconds to throw the disc. The defender guarding the thrower “marker” counts out the stall count.

5. Change of Possession: When a pass is not completed (ex. Out of bounds, drop, block, interception, stalled), the defense immediately takes possession of the disc and becomes the offense.

6. Substitutions: Players not in the game may replace players in the games after a score, injury or timout.

7. Non-Contact: No physical contact is allowed between players. Picks and screens are also prohibited. A foul occurs when contact is made.

8. Fouls: When a player initiates contact on another player a foul occurs. When a foul disrupts possession, the play resumes as if the possession was retained. If the player committing the foul disagrees with the foul call, the play is redone

9. Officiating: Players are responsible for their own foul and line calls. Players resolve their own disputes. However each field will be designated a field monitor who will assist with any disputes or disagreements and to help clarify rules.

10. Spirit of the Game: Ultimate stresses sportsmanship and fair play. Competitive play is encouraged, but never at the expense of respect between players, adherence to the rules, and the basic joy of play.
